What I Wore To Work Wednesday: Topshop Modern Tailoring

So you'll know from my very first "What I Wore To Work" post that the point of WIWTW was to show the fabulous possibilities for work outfits for people who normally stick to a tried and trusted suit..

I've showcased a silk blazer, a jersey dress, a fake tie - a couple of options to wake up your work wardrobe. And today? Well... I seem to have come full circle. Today, I'm showing you a suit. Ah?

But this isn't just any suit- today I'm rocking a "textured, coloured blazer/trouser combo" from Topshop. POW.

Topshop Modern Tailoring Blazer £100
Topshop Modern Tailoring Trousers £50
Banana Republic Camisole £19 (not ironed, soz)

In a lovely shade of navy meets oxford blue, it's a refreshing take on the standard City uniform of MIB blazers and matching trousers. (Incidentally, when I was younger I wanted to be an MIB, ahhh Will Smith - he can do no wrong!)

The Fit

The cut is slightly relaxed with a longer-than-expected cut in the jacket  -but not so much that it becomes a casual suit.

(A casual suit - should such a thing even exist?)

Although the jacket is slightly longer than normal, the trousers are actually quite high-waisted so they can definitely be worn as a separate piece.

I'd team the trousers with a white shirt or tee for a clean, minimal look but they're also slim enough to help carry off any top-heavy styles on the weekend like a chunky oversize print jumper.

Check out the unique textured print up close.
Let's Get Closer.

No idea what print this is.

A sort of Houndstooth meets mini check?? Answers on a postcard?
Who even uses postcards for competitions anymore anyway!?

it really adds a bit of dimension and movement to a suit that may overwhelm some figures otherwise.

What lies beneath

I've teamed this colourful suit with a taupe camisole which I got in the Banana Republic sale. It  doesn't detract from the pattern or colour and the silk adds a touch of luxe. Definitely recommend NOT storing your camisoles in a scrunched up ball like it seems mine has been...

So there we go! Proof that a suit doesn't have to be boring!

What do you think? Courageous yet corporate enough to wear at work.... or still too boring for you?

Do you have to dress smart for work? Or are suits only for interviews?

ps - apologies for the varying picture quality - I'm currently working with a self-timed camera and a stack of DVDs jenga-d up on a coffee table.. Such a pro, I know.
